Dylan Kraus is familiar with small-scale paintings that utilise dark mostly blue tones, and deep symbolism to channel his curiosity about the universe. Through Kraus' art, plenty of motifs in the form of sequences and symbols are encountered, which have references that range from fables to the occult. In every work, countless layers can be peeled one by one to reveal deeper conclusions about the universe itself. The mysterious air that his work carries can be parlayed to the same realm as certain films, as there is an eventual resolution that is realizable in his works, all done in levels of subtlety that are not overwhelming. Kraus challenges social Western cultural norms through the softness that is associated with his art, which comes from the way he was raised, where vulnerability and being in tune with his emotions were not taboo. In turn, in the otherwise eerie and mystifying cerulean tones of his work, there is an undeniable calmness that can be felt.
The surplus of cosmic and natural elements gives the essence of an abundance of space to his intimately scaled works, while the shapes and forms depicted are used to create a transcendental atmosphere that conforms with Kraus’ own spirituality. He imagines the universe as one enormous mechanical machine where all moving parts move with ease.
