Explore Central London through my route
  • I would begin at Alison Jacques who fairly recently opened her beautiful space on Cork Street; she is unusually showing a special exhibition of the collection of the late critic and curator Guy Brett. Like so many people I am always curious to see what other people collect, it’s so personal, and in this case, Guy had such an incisive vision. Through his career, he was building relationships with avant-garde and experimental artists, mostly from Latin America, while the rest of the art world was looking the other way. The show is called 'Angel with a Gun: Homage to Guy Brett' and I have no doubt it will be both inspiring and a delight to the senses.

While you are on Cork Street, there are so many other spaces to see: Waddington Custot has been there since the 1960s, while Goodman Gallery, Tiwani Contemporary and Stephen Friedman Gallery are all relatively new. If it is the Friday of London Gallery Weekend and you are following my route, Adelaide Cioni* will be showing a playful performance piece between two dancers which will be quite beautiful; it explores our desire and fear of connection with one another.

Sadie Coles HQ is a must and one of my favourite galleries; they will have Matthew Barney on Kingly Street which will be unmissable, and  their space on Bury Street down in St James’s will be open with 'zero point everything', a show by New York-based Uri Aran which I am excited to see. Aran works across various media, often looking at language and the construction of meaning and narrative, and for this show, the exhibition itself is treated as a medium, which I think could be an interesting premise.

Sadie Coles The Shop HQ is hosting 243 Luz, so I will stop in there too: 243 Luz is a Margate-based gallery; I love how galleries are supporting each other in this way now and how this gallery outside of the capital will benefit from London Gallery Weekend this year.

*Adelaide Cioni's performance mentioned in the itinerary will take place on Friday 31 May, at 2pm and 5pm at St James's Church, Piccadilly, London W1J 9LL (note from LGW).
