The Familiars

Pilar Corrias is pleased to present a solo exhibition by American painter Kat Lyons (b. 1991, Louisville, KY), following her recent US institutional debut at Marquez Art Projects, Miami. The exhibition features a new body of work exploring the complexities of earthly life and questioning the limits of human categorisation.

Drawing on research spanning fables, medical and scientific documentation, contemporary advertising and her experience working on a livestock farm, Lyons’ work examines the category of the 'animal' and histories of nonhuman use for human advancement, from biomedical research to agricultural and technological interventions. Her theatrical depictions of animals and vegetation combine eeriness and beauty, foregrounding nonhuman emotional lives, their contributions to humankind and our uneasy relationship with other species.
