Cedric Bardawil is excited to present Alice Macdonald’s debut solo exhibition with the gallery, Every Window is a Holiday. With the idea of the window as its focal point, the exhibition celebrates Macdonald’s multidisciplinary and immersive practice, comprising mural and stage set constructions, ceramics, and music, alongside her intricately layered paintings on canvas.
Conceptually driven by diaristic practices, she reconstructs her world – familiar landscapes and interiors, friends, family and her own reflection – to arouse an emotional engagement that reaches well beyond the physical worlds she creates. Describing her process as 'unconscious thinking through making', the artist uses her work to consider the experience of living, with the works included in this exhibition largely influenced by physicist Carlo Rovelli’s descriptions of nature as light, matter and time. 'I am fascinated by the idea that air and light have tangible, physical substance and how to depict this,' notes the artist.
For Macdonald, the window has become a tool within this method of depiction; it simultaneously frames, contains, exposes and frees her subjects. ‘Every Window is a Holiday’ acts as a record of Macdonald’s time spent looking at, seeing and recreating her subjects, it is neither wholly autobiographical nor completely fictional, rather it is a depiction of her sincere relationship with the people and places that call her attention.
