Modern Art is a London based gallery opened by Stuart Shave in 1998. In 20 years the gallery has occupied six locations in east and central London, presently being homed across two London spaces; a converted 5,000 sq ft pre-war factory building in the Clerkenwell area of central London and a new gallery space in the heart of Mayfair, which provides 1,200 sq ft of exhibition space, as well as a viewing room and offices.     Modern Art is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of new work by Sarah Rapson. This is Rapson’s first exhibition with Modern Art, and it includes paintings, works on paper, photography and video. Sarah Rapson’s work – spanning painting, photography, video, drawing and collage - is made slowly and thoughtfully with a careful and contemplative eye to her chosen materials. Her paintings are made and remade from what she has at hand: house paint, tape, string, discarded packing boxes, printed matter, as well as more traditional oil on linen, or ink on paper. Attention is given not only to the painterly qualities of these materials – the delicate lines and tones of a faded newspaper clipping, the subtle contrast of textures of house paint on stained cotton – but also to their historical precedents in the canon of Modernist painting.
